PHASE I (Round 3) |

OUTCOME 1: Marine ecological gap assessment |
Specific actions |
Description |
Progress snapshot |
Steps taken this quarter (if any) |
Activity 1.1 |
Define conservation elements and threats for marine ecosystems |
4 = activity completed |
The conservation elements were defined as Objects of conservation of thick and fine filters as also the pressures and threats to these elements. At the moment the final report is being reviewed |
Activity 1.2a |
Map biological information for identified conservation elements |
4 = activity completed |
For the identification of the conservation elements were necesary to make maps of ecosystems: like beaches, marine mangrove swamps, reefs, grass, distribution of fish, lagoons and others. also the pressures to these were analyzed. |
Activity 1.2b |
Assess PA governance |
2 = activity fully underway |
This is an activity that we have pendent to execute for the month of December and comming January. |
Activity 1.3 |
Update the distribution and occurrence data for marine and coastal biodiversity |
3 = significant progress, nearly complete |
The emptiness of information with geographical reference was an element found during this work. Despite maps of distribution of fish, marine grass were constructed, turtles, lizards, chorales, (choral of the Pacific it is new information genereted whithin the GAP ) shrimps, etc. |
Activity 1.4 |
Develop a map of community conserved sites |
4 = activity completed |
The conservation sites occur in the communal territories of the ethnic groups of the Nicaraguan Caribbean Coast, these correspond mainly to coastal lagoons, thats way we only developed a list of sites. |
Activity 1.5 |
Develop conservation layer of showing potential PA boundaries |
3 = significant progress, nearly complete |
This activity is practically completed. We have pendent the communal consultations with the actors and leaders to have there approval or rejection, for the sites of Monke Point, Desembocadura Laguna de Bluefields, El cocal, Corn Island on the Caribbean and La anciana on the pacific coast. |
Activity 1.6 |
Compare boundaries with existing PAs to identify gaps |
3 = significant progress, nearly complete |
A marxam computer program was used to see the existing connections between marine and coastal ecosystem |
Activity 1.7 |
Assess costs involved in setting up or extending marine protected areas |
3 = significant progress, nearly complete |
Costs for the creation or expansion of new marine protected areas have not yet been developed. These costs relate only to administrative costs |
Activity 1.8 |
Finalize portfolio of new marine sites |
4 = activity completed |
The portfolio of proposed sites for new protected areas has ended. currently are completing the data sheets for each of the sites. Also it is pending the presentation of these new sites to local authorities |
Activity 1.9 |
Validate portfolio of new sites, including public workshops and consultations |
2 = activity fully underway |
Consultation with local authorities is the activity that is pending. For the Nicaraguan Caribbean, held in December and January and the Pacific will be made in January and February |
Activity 1.10 |
Define at least 2 new MPAs and develop guidance for gazetting |
3 = significant progress, nearly complete |
Two new sites proposed as marine AP had been identified, mapped and defined. Pearl Cays in the Caribbean, the proposed legislation is in the National Assembly. La Anciana, in the Pacific, there is pending consultation with the mayor of the municipality of Tola and other stakeholders to define and agree the management category. |

Obstacles faced in implementing Activity 1: |
The inability to agree on dates with local stakeholders to develop workshops is one of the biggest obstacles that cause delays.The stringent administrative controls are a learner's daily lessons. Weather events have caused delay in the development of activities and in addition to that the activities of drug dealers who cause insecurity in the Caribbean zone. |
Lessons learned in implementing Activity 1: |
From the meetings and consultative workshops have learned that there is much descriptive information but little information georeferenced. We have learned that we must work more closely with local actors and local community level. The GAP analysis has provided information of the existence of corals in the Pacific of Nicaragua, as new information. |

OUTCOME 2: Integrate gap assessment results into national master plan |
Specific actions |
Description |
Progress snapshot |
Steps taken this quarter (if any) |
Activity 2.1 |
Synthesize gap assessment data with financial and capacity gaps |
0 = not yet begun, no progress |
Activity 2.2 |
Consultations on synthesis report |
0 = not yet begun, no progress |
Activity 2.3 |
Work with SINAP to incorporate results of synthesis into master plan |
0 = not yet begun, no progress |
